Abstract

Lactic acid (CH₃CHOHCOOH) is an important chemical used in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and bioplastic industries. The demand for lactic acid in Indonesia continues to increase; however, it is still largely fulfilled through imports. This preliminary design aims to plan a lactic acid plant with a capacity of 7,000 tons per year using bagasse as the main raw material, due to its abundance in East Java and high cellulose content. The production process includes pre-treatment, hydrolysis, fermentation, and purification stages. The plant is planned to be located in Saradan, Madiun Regency, which offers adequate access to raw materials, transportation, and utilities. The analysis results indicate that the plant is economically feasible and has the potential to reduce import dependency while increasing the added value of sugarcane waste.
