The Use of Snowball Throwing and Talking Stick in Teaching Speaking

Abstract

This study was aimed to find out whether there was a difference on EFL pupils’ speaking achievement of procedure text between those who learned by carrying out snowball throwing technique and those who learned by carrying out talking stick technique in the eleventh-grade EFL pupils of SMKN 1 Banjarmasin 2019/2020. This study implemented a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design which consisted of experimental as well as control groups. The samples were two classes with 68 EFL pupils in total who were taken by carrying out a cluster random sampling method. The finding showed that there was a difference achievement in both classes. It can be seen from the calculation of t-test result (8.92) which was higher than the t-table (1.99). In addition, the standard score of post-test in the experimental group was 82.11 while the control group was 73.17. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Based on the result above, it is suggested for the English teacher to use snowball throwing technique as the alternative technique in teaching speaking because it encouraged the EFL pupils to be active in participating the education process better than talking stick technique.
